CAMYOSFOP, UN Women Drill IDP Women On Income Generating Activities

By Nformi Sonde Kinsai The Cameroon Youths and Students Forum for Peace, CAMYOSFOP, in partnership with the Centre for the Needy and the Vulnerable, CEFONEV, and SWOA-Cameroon, has drilled internally displaced women/girls on the production of antiseptic soap, eau de javel, menthol and hydro-alcoholic gel. The two-day capacity building, which took place at the CEFONEV training centre in Obili, Yaounde, on November 16 and 17, was funded by the UN Women Country Office Cameroon, in line with the project titled: “COVID-19 Prevention Within Vulnerable Women Groups (Women Living with HIV and most Vulnerable) in the Centre and West Regions of Cameroon” Addressing participants at the start of the exercise, the CEO of CAMYOSFOP, Eugine Ngalim, hailed the UN Women for providing the resources and disclosed that the project is not starting today, but that it is in its second year running. He said the training falls within the framework of providing holistic support to Women Living with HIV and internally displaced Women from the Northwest and Southwest Regions amid the COVID-19 pandemic. He said CAMYOSFOP and the partners are determined to build and instill life-changing skills in the vulnerable women/girls in the domain of production of antiseptic soap, eau de javel, menthol and hydro-alcoholic gel that is expected to help them establish little income generating businesses in order to improve on their livelihoods. Ngalim said the project started last year in the East Region where women living with HIV in the Baka and Mbororo female folks were trained. He stated that the same training was given to a women group and sewing machines donated in the Southwest. Another women’s group around the CDC camp in Tiko has also been trained. He told reporters in an interview that, after the Yaounde training, there were moving to Bafoussam in the West Region to train widows, IDP women/girls and Women Living with HIV. In his opening remarks to launch the training, the Gender Expert at UN Women Country Office, Bouchard Zambo, said he is delighted each time he is in front of women. He said, with the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic with its devastating consequences, they at the UN Women started brainstorming on what to do to positively impact on lives of women; and the project which started in the East and Southwest Regions and now extending to Yaounde and Bafoussam cropped up. He said, from their assessment and following the massive numbers of IDP women/girls in the city of Yaounde, they discovered that the NGOs were not doing quite enough to assist and assuage their pains in the face of the difficulties. He hailed CAMYOSFOP for thinking about the vulnerable IDPs in Yaounde and called on the trainees to be focus and receive the life-changing skills. Zambo said they will be highly delighted if the life of only one woman changes as a result of the training.
